addiction
i've come to realize that my life has a constant in it. a constant stream of obsessions and addictions. now, you're worried. i've gone and instilled a small sense of panic in you. wasn't that nice of me? well, take a deep breath and let it out slowly while i take a moment to assure you that everything is ok. i am ok (although your and my sense of the word 'ok' may differ.... let's just agree to disagree, shall we? ;).
the obsessions come in waves and create deep-seated addictions to which i am all but powerless. case in point: the office. after skeptically listening to the show being praised for four straight seasons, i timidly decided to watch the show from the beginning and give it a fair chance. now, i've watched every episode to date, nary make plans for a thursday night lest i miss the initial airing of the show's latest delectable 30 mins, and i own every season of the show. i dissect the characters, plot lines, patterns, etc... until i feel completely satiated and can fast until the next week's airing.
left with doubts about my obsessions? "you're just a fan of the show" you say? well, that brings us to case in point numero dos: twilight. (leave your opinions at the door and just keep reading)
now, i was almost determined not to like this. i was convinced that the excessive hype around the movie and the subsequent book series was just a bunch of media stirring corrupting the all-to-impressionable minds who were listening. i truly believed it all to be a bunch of teeny bopper entertainment. and i actually like vampire movies! the media also started making a big deal out of rob pattinson. i didn't get it. sure he has some chiseled cheekbones and potentially mesmerizing eyes, but many a male actor could be described in the same way. so, i avoided it in the movie theaters and chalked the whole thing up as a potential chick flick rental down the line to form my own opinion on. well, i rented it and it was love at first sight. i instantly watched it a second time (i mean the dvd didn't even get turned off in between viewings!). i realize i sound like a lunatic, but this latest addiction is serious. i bought the entire book series and am reading over a hundred pages a night. i can't get enough. i downloaded the soundtrack and have played it almost constantly. now, this whole obsession started last sunday and admittedly i see no coming up for air from this one for a while. at the same time, i can't help but wince when i think that i might be one of the fans that goes to the midnight showing of the second movie in the saga when it opens.
i really didn't know this about myself. this latest twilight thing has opened my eyes to my own pattern. i do this with everything i like. writing this, i was thinking about music, books, subject areas, etc... reflecting on this though, i realize this pattern could easily be found in my love life as well. oh geeze....

Gosh, Jen. This obsessive streak of yours is so bizarre--I really can't relate. You're weird. ;)
