total bummer
stupid wireless company and their stupid contracts. you'd think if you've been a customer since freakin 1998 that you could be on a month-to-month basis by now. but alas, i am not.
they even tricked me into thinking my contract was up already. i found out on my way over to wireless co. #2, that it isn't up for another month or so. to top that, my current wireless company talked me out of a $500 phone and an $80/month plan. they're nuts.
so wi-co #2 told me that i could either:
a.) cancel with wi-co #1 and pay the $175 cancellation fee
b.) keep wi-co #1 until it ends in a month and start a new contract with them (to do this i would need to have a temp number until my current number frees up and then they'd switch it -- but who the heck needs 2 mobiles at once? too confusing)
c.) wait until wi-co #1 contract ends and then get the new phone at wi-co #2.
i picked 'c'. i had suz's rational teachings in the back of my head telling me not to waste more of my money ("its just money" said the little devil on the other shoulder, but i ignored it this time) ;)

if you act all sugar-sweet and say how much you've heard their service is better and you'll tell all your friends about how awesome they are and (most-importantly) sign a loooong contract with wi-co #2, they might pay the $175 cancellation fee with wi-co #1 for you. worth a shot.
i know if i had the negotiating powers that you have, law boy, that i'd be able to do it. generally though, when things go wrong like this, i just suck it up and go with the flow. unless they've just pissed me off and then i get a tad more hostile. like i might shoot em a dirty look or something ;)
